In situ hybridisation

In situ hybridisation (ISH) is an extremely powerful research tool for the molecular biologist, which allows cellular localisation of a variety of nucleic acid sequences. With the development of novel techniques such as differential display PCR, subtractive hybridisation and transgenic animal technology, there is a much increased need for the cellular localisation of genes isolated or expressed using these techniques. Many of the pharmaceutical companies are also currently compiling information regarding novel genes with potential therapeutic implications. There will be an increasing need to localise these genes and examine the effects of therapeutic agents on gene transcription, which can be done using ISH.
